Description of Refractory Mortar

Refractory mortar, also known as refractory mud or jointing material, is a high-temperature resistant paste or mixture, typically composed of materials like fireclay, high-alumina cement, silica, or magnesia-based compounds, corresponding to the brick type it serves. It is characterized by its excellent workability, suitable plasticity, and strong adhesive strength after drying and sintering. Key properties include:

  1. High Temperature Resistance: It can withstand extreme temperatures, often exceeding 1500°C, without melting or degrading significantly.
  2. Chemical Stability: It exhibits good resistance to chemical erosion from slag, molten metal, and flue gases.
  3. Thermal Shock Resistance: Many formulations can endure rapid temperature changes without cracking.
  4. Excellent Bonding Strength: Upon curing and firing, it forms a robust ceramic bond with the refractory bricks, ensuring the integrity of the lining.
  5. Controlled Shrinkage/Expansion: Its thermal expansion characteristics are designed to match those of the adjoining bricks, minimizing stress at the joints.

  1. Brick Laying and Jointing: It is primarily used to lay and bond individual refractory bricks in linings for various furnaces, such as blast furnaces, reheating furnaces, cement kilns, and incinerators. The thin, consistent joints it creates minimize heat loss and prevent slag penetration.
  2. Monolithic Lining Repair: It is effectively used for patching damaged areas in existing refractory linings, restoring the surface and extending the service life of the structure.
  3. Sealing and Insulation: By filling gaps and voids, it helps in sealing the lining, improving overall gas tightness, and enhancing the thermal efficiency of the industrial unit.
